You do not need leather shoes with leather soles, only the tops need to be made from leather. Sneakers are a good option for when your little girl wants to play in the sandbox or just muck around.
The two important aspects of a shoe's sole are the flexibility and the traction. You want to sole of a shoe to be thick enough but not so thick that there is not any flexibility to them.
